How to Create a Found Poem
- Choose 12-15 phrases
from an expository (non-fiction) passage written about your topic
(image database, newspaper articles, online articles).
- You may not add words
to the phrases you select, but you may delete words.
- You may reorganize the
order of the phrases, but not the actual order of the words in
the phrase.
- Do not
try to make your lines rhyme.
- Reread your draft and
highlight a key word or phrase that captures the spirit or main
idea of your found
poem. This will
be your unifying
theme.
- Start and end your poem with the unifying theme.
- Edit your found poem.
- Your final poem should
be 8-12 lines
